Client/ServerNorthwind ASP.NetFeedback/Comments
Take a test drive of the MS Access Northwind Traders sample database that has been converted into an ASP.Net application employing Ajax.Net Extensions, SQL Server 2005, Reporting Services (SSRS) and Crystal Reports.Net.
This is a fully functioning application. We encourage you to perform insert, update and delete operations on all WebForms. (Data is refreshed periodically). As with Access, changes (inserts and updates) are implicitly performed after navigating to another record. Each WebForm contains an extended navigation bar for traversing and updating the database, with descriptive tool tips that should make operating the application self-explanatory.
The Orders form deserves some explanation. A new WebForm (Order Selection) has been interposed to improve performance by selecting a single order at a time. This is a typical ASP.Net conversion technique for MS Access forms that retrieve large result sets.
The reports issued from the Main Switchboard are implemented using SSRS. When prompted for a Report Server login, enter "bhc" for the User name and "guest " for the Password. To operate additional Northwind WebForms and Crystal Reports, press the Database Window button (or Alt-W) from the Main Switchboard.
Using Bunker Hill's tools and methodologies, it took one of our technical staff less than two weeks to migrate the database to SQL Server 2005, convert the MS-Access forms and reports to ASP.Net WebForms and both SSRS and CrystalReports.Net, and to implement the functionality of the original Access forms.
