Installation Notes

General Information

After the installation completes, you can start Access and use Scriptoria by opening any Access database and selecting Scriptoria from the Access Tools | Add-ins menu. Scriptoria will create DB2 databases and register ODBC data sources as you need them.  No prior DB2 setup is required, however the DB2Client software must be installed and started before you begin. Only one instance of Scriptoria should be active at any one time.

DB2 databases created using Scriptoria can be manipulated using any development environment. You do not have to use Access. It is important to note, however, that DB2 databases on an Internet server are not limited for use by browser software. You can write Access applications for reporting and maintaining the data content on Internet servers as the Tutorial illustrates.

Internet-enabling Access applications that have been migrated to DB2

First, use the Scriptoria Create DB2 Application to adapt the Access front-end to operate with the remote DB2 database.

To provide centralized distribution, and ultimately Internet-enable the application, the newly created Access database file is first copied to an Internet site. A "menu" page may be setup that contains links to one or more Internet-enabled Access application files. Now that the Access file contains no data (only links to the DB2 database), it is small and can be downloaded quickly. We actually recommend creating an MDE file from the MDB created by Scriptoria; this produces a compiled application and reduces file size. You can also create "run-time" versions of the converted Access application that do not require Access to be installed. (Requires Office 2000 Developer).

To download and operate the Internet-enabled Access application, users must have:

MS-Access must be installed unless a run-time application was created If the DB2 database is cataloged using TCP/IP, the application can be operated from anywhere there is an Internet connection.
